It is also important to understand that a short reassurance scan is different from a detailed fetal anomaly examination. Each type of ultrasound has its own clinical purpose, and private reassurance scans should be regarded as additional to, rather than replacements for, recommended NHS antenatal screening and maternity care.
Paying privately does not automatically mean that a scan is more accurate or more comprehensive. The examination's purpose, the sonographer's training, the equipment and the stage of pregnancy all matter. A short reassurance scan is different from a detailed fetal anomaly examination.
If the pregnancy is earlier than expected, a heartbeat or the pregnancy itself may not yet be visible. This does not always mean there is a problem. A repeat scan, blood tests or assessment by an early pregnancy service may be needed. The findings and your symptoms determine the next steps.
If the pregnancy cannot be located, appropriate follow-up is essential because an ectopic pregnancy has not been excluded. Your sonographer should explain the findings and any referral or follow-up advice.
Later services, such as gender scans and 3D or 4D imaging, have a different purpose and suitable gestational windows. They do not replace the NHS anomaly scan or other recommended antenatal screening.
