A viability scan is an early ultrasound for expectant mothers in their first trimester to confirm the presence and position of the pregnancy within the uterus.
If you’re in the early stages of pregnancy and want to confirm that everything is developing as it should, a
Private Viability Ultrasound Scan — also known as a
Transvaginal Scan — can provide the reassurance you need. At
Miracle Inside Diagnostic Scan Clinic in
Leeds, we specialise in
early pregnancy scanning, helping you confirm the presence of a viable pregnancy safely and accurately.
This
pelvic ultrasound uses advanced imaging to check for the
gestational sac, yolk sac, fetal pole and heartbeat — even before these details are visible in a standard abdominal scan.
What the Viability (Transvaginal) Scan Shows
Our qualified
maternity sonographers perform this
private pelvic scan with sensitivity and care. During your appointment, we will assess:
- Presence and position of the pregnancy within the uterus
- Confirmation of a fetal heartbeat
- Measurement of the gestational age
- Detection of single or multiple pregnancies
- Evaluation of the uterus and ovaries
This scan is especially useful for women with symptoms such as bleeding, pain or uncertainty after a positive pregnancy test.
It is also recommended for those with a
history of miscarriage, fertility treatment or ectopic pregnancy concerns.
When to Have an Early Pregnancy Scan
The
viability scan is usually performed from
6 to 10 weeks of pregnancy.
At this early stage, a
transvaginal ultrasound can provide clearer and more reliable images than an abdominal scan.
Your appointment will take approximately
20–30 minutes, and you’ll receive
immediate results and
printed images of your pregnancy.

Scan Overview
A
viability scan is an
early ultrasound for expectant mothers in their first trimester. The
Private Baby Scan Clinic in West Yorkshire offers a transabdominal
2D scan and, if needed, a transvaginal
scan.
This scan measures the baby’s crown-to-rump length, confirming gestational age, assessing the yolk sac position, visually confirming the heartbeat and identifying single or multiple fetuses.
It provides parents with peace of mind and details about the estimated due date. If the expectant parent is over six weeks pregnant, our sonographers can include a glimpse of the heartbeat in the report.
Additionally, the scan helps rule out ectopic pregnancy, where the fertilised egg grows outside the uterus.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
1. What is a transvaginal viability scan?
A transvaginal viability scan is an internal ultrasound performed in the first few weeks of pregnancy to assess the pregnancy. It can help identify the gestational sac, yolk sac, fetal pole and heartbeat when appropriate for the gestational age.
2. Is it safe to have a transvaginal scan?
Yes. Transvaginal ultrasound uses ultrasound waves rather than ionising radiation and is commonly used for early pregnancy assessment.
3. Will the scan hurt or be uncomfortable?
Some patients may experience mild discomfort during a transvaginal scan. The ultrasound probe is covered with a protective sheath and gel, and the procedure is performed gently by a trained professional with your comfort and consent in mind.
4. Do I need to get ready for the scan?
You do not usually need a full bladder for a
transvaginal scan, unlike an abdominal scan. Wearing comfortable clothing can make the appointment easier.
5. What happens if there is no heartbeat?
If a heartbeat is not visible, it may be because the pregnancy is earlier than expected. Depending on the findings and gestational age, you may be advised to have another scan after an appropriate interval or to contact your GP, midwife or NHS Early Pregnancy Assessment Service for further assessment.
6. Is this scan a replacement for my regular pregnancy scans or NHS scans?
No. A
viability transvaginal scan is a private ultrasound assessment that provides additional information during early pregnancy. It does not replace your routine NHS maternity care or NHS pregnancy scans.

Why Should I Get This Scan?
- A viability scan is performed to assess the location of the pregnancy, look for the presence of a heartbeat when appropriate for gestational age, identify single or multiple pregnancies, and assess the pregnancy sac and embryo.
- A viability scan may be recommended to establish gestational age and for patients with a history of early miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.
- Our fully qualified and accredited sonographer will also assess your uterus and ovaries, and a written report will be provided.
When Should I Get This Scan?
- You should be 6–10 weeks of gestation. Scanning very early in pregnancy may result in an inconclusive assessment.
- Depending on your gestational age and the images obtained abdominally, a transvaginal scan may be recommended with your consent to obtain clearer images.
- You must sign a consent form before this scan.
How to Prepare for the 2D/3D/4D Baby Scan
- On the day of your scan, please ensure you wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Please follow any preparation instructions provided when booking your particular scan.
- A partially full bladder may provide better images for some transabdominal ultrasound examinations.

- Reassurance Scan – available later in pregnancy to assess the baby's wellbeing and growth, depending on the particular scan package selected.
