Thyroid Function Test: Comprehensive Assessment for Thyroid Health
A Thyroid function test, or TFT blood test, looks at the levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine (T4) in your blood. It can be used to detect an underactive thyroid or over-active thyroid gland.
A thyroid function test is an important component of our unwell patient screen. Do not worry about determining for yourself which, if any, blood test you need. This is something that your doctor will be able to determine and explain during your consultation.
How Many Attempts to Collect the Blood Sample?
- Please take note of the following in our Phlebotomy policy: Each staff member is permitted only two attempts to collect a blood sample from a patient.
- However, if a patient's veins are difficult to access, another phlebotomist may take over the collection, or the patient will be rebooked to be attended by our Senior Registered Manager, with the patient's consent.
All our blood tests are available same day, with some of the fastest results in London. One of our doctors will take the time to explain to you what your test results mean and put in place any appropriate next steps based on those results
We provide a same-day blood result service for some blood tests (Monday – Friday, excluding Bank Holidays). A £ 35 fee for Phlebotomy + Courier charge will be applied for all Bloods.
Please inform us at the time of booking if you require same-day results.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- What is a blood test for thyroid function?
A Thyroid Function Blood Test checks for certain hormones in your blood to see how well your thyroid gland is working. This can help find conditions where the thyroid is either too active or not active enough.
- Why is it important for my health to get my thyroid tested?
The thyroid gland controls many body functions, such as metabolism, energy levels, body temperature, heart rate, and more. Thyroid levels that are too high or too low can change your mood, weight, energy, and general health.
- How long does it take to get results?
Depending on how long it takes the lab to process the samples, results are usually ready in a few days. Your doctor will explain what the numbers mean for your health.
- What do thyroid tests that aren't normal mean?
If your hormone levels are too high or too low, it could mean you have hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid), or another thyroid disorder. Your doctor will look at the results in light of your symptoms and medical history.
- How often should you check your thyroid function?
How often you do it depends on how healthy you are. People who have thyroid problems, take thyroid medication, or have symptoms that are related to thyroid problems may need to be checked on a regular basis. Others may only need to be tested once a year or as directed by a doctor.
